In this book, Kay Atwood visits the surveyors' familial and geographic origins; describes the seasons of their field work, the urban and rural landscapes they encountered, and the financial and political pressures that bore down on them; and uses the engineers' own observations recorded in field notes, journals, and correspondence to depict their personal experiences and hardships.

Homes of the First Ladies

...William G. Clotworthy, author of Homes and Libraries of the Presidents; Presidential Sites; and In the Footsteps of George Washington and a leading authority on sites that honor these leaders, brings us yet another historical guidebook -- this time focusing on sites that commemorate and interpret the First Ladies of the United States.  In Clotworthy's usual flowing prose and easy-to-use format, the book contains a brief introductory chapter that reviews the changing role of First Ladies in American history and summarizes the recent growth of sites that commemorate these women, and then systematically provides basic information about each First Lady and the publicly accessible sites that commemorate her. Specifically, for each First Lady, Clotworthy provides a brief biographical sketch, and then identifies, describes, and provides access information about one or more sites at which her life and legacy are interpreted. Of particular importance is the fact that, for each First Lady,  Clotworthy has identified and described at minimum the one site at which each First Lady’s life is best interpreted.
