For K-12 teachers, STEPS—Standard Themes for Educational Progress make the process of adapting California’s Science Standards into their curriculum quick and easy.

Each STEPS manual has reorganized state-written learning objectives into teacher-friendly themes; therefore making adaptation faster and easier for the benefit of teachers, their students, and administrators.

In October of 1998 California’s State Board of Education adopted the Science Content Standards for California Public Schools and in August of 2010 it adopted The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects. This STEPS manual uses its unique, teacher-friendly vertical alignment and accounting tables to present both the state’s Science Standards and the Science-specific elements of the Common Core English Language Arts Standards. The College and Career Readiness (CCR) standards referenced in this text were released by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) in September 2009 and form the framework for the Common Core.

This manual is intended to clarify the standards for California Science education and to empower real-world implementation.

Science themes covered in the STEPS manual are listed below, and include a total of 5 learning strands, with 2 sub-strands. (Please click on Sample Pages for detailed information on the learning strands.)

Investigation & Experimentation
Physical Science
Life Science
Earth Science
Reading & Writing Skills for Science & Technical Subjects

Each manual was developed with feedback from California teacher focus groups and content-area experts with the intent of creating a user-friendly, high-impact resource for improved instruction, differentiation, and professional development.

Designed to hang like a calendar in any classroom or administrative office, each manual features text and tables that account for the number of objectives within each learning strand in the curriculum. (See Sample Pages.)  This evidences previously unidentified gaps in the learning progression and offers great opportunities for improving student achievement.

This STEPS manual covers K-12--thirteen grade levels at a glance!

Already active in Ohio in four content areas and 13 grade levels, the most recent district feedback indicates improvement on standardized test scores!

STEPS—Standard Themes for Educational Progress manuals are also available for California Social Studies for the 1998 state Standards. California has adopted the new national Common Core Standards in Mathematics and Reading & Writing Across the Curriculum, manuals that are also available in the STEPS series.

PLEASE NOTE! For those who plan to start teaching students using the newly revised 2010 Common Core Standards, STEPS manuals are now available, and include the newly written national Standards for Common Core Reading & Writing Across the Curriculum and Common Core Mathematics.
