Rainbows of Rock, Tables of Stone- The Natural Arches and Pillars of Ohio
by Timothy A. Snyder (Click for author info)
ISBN 0-939923-73-4; 978-0-939923-73-1
Rainbows of Rock, Tables of Stone is the first book that deals specifically with the natural arches and pillars of Ohio, and is one of the most extensive compilations of information about features of this type for any state or comparable region. This book is an ambitious undertaking that reports upon 26 years of research carried out by the author from 1983 to 2009.
The majority of the book is devoted to the systematic presentation of information about each arch and pillar known in Ohio. Arches and pillars are treated in separate chapters, or catalogs. Individual features within each catalog are presented in order of their geological age. Descriptions of each arch and pillar include general location, catalog number, primary dimensions of width and height, host strata and structure, and geologic and geomorphic context at the site. Each feature is interpreted and, when available, oral traditions and archaeological and historical facts associated with the site also are provided.
The early chapters provide a brief background on the historic and scientific study of natural arches, bridges, and pillars; it outlines the geological processes by which arches and pillars are formed; and it reviews the technical vocabulary and field methods the author uses to describe each arch and pillar included in the book.
Concluding chapters provide (a) an interpretation of the demise of arches and pillars as a result of continuing erosion by natural processes, as well as destruction by human agency, and (b) a guide to readers wishing to visit features that are managed to allow public access.
Three appendices include tabulations of Ohio’s arches and pillars and metric-English conversion tables. The book contains a rich array of technical drawings and historical figures. Recent photographs add further texture and value to this book.
Although technical in approach and content, this book is written in clearly accessible language and will be of interest and value to general readers and specialists alike.
